Teaching Students to Focus

If you think that attention spans are shrinking, you might be on to something. Computer scientists and psychologists have been studying attention spans for about 20 years, over which time the average time that a person can focus on one thing has dropped from around 2Β½ minutes to around 45 seconds!

However, there is hope on the horizon! New research emerging from developmental cognitive neuroscience indicates that attention is a trainable cognitive skill. Just like any other skills, it can improve with deliberate practice.

Strategies that may help expand attention include:

  • Journal writing in response to a specific prompt
  • Employ the Pomodoro method of using a timer to focus on work for a specific time before a break
  • Use technology selectively
  • Teach students why focus matters
